The HBLB’s allocations to Prize Money for 2008 was £56.3m and 2009 was £62.5m. For 2010, the total prize money allocation was originally £57m which was reduced to £54.2m (as agreed by the Board in April 2010), but has subsequently been reduced further to £52.1m (which was done in the light of revised income forecasts).

The allocation is distributed on a 60:40 basis between Flat and National Hunt racing, in accordance with the proportions of levy generated by betting on the two codes.

Prize Money divides into Basic Daily Rates (BDR) and Prize Money for Apprentice races, Extra races and Divided races. The bulk of Prize Money is given to racecourses in the form of the BDR.

Extra Race and Apprentice Race Schemes
Apprentice races are funded by the HBLB as part of the training programme for youngsters who want to become jockeys in order to give more opportunities to young people who want to be involved in the horseracing industry.

The Extra Race Scheme, formerly the Seventh Race Scheme was retitled and its purpose redefined, in consultation with the BHA, in order to focus more on races likely to be levy-generative.

The HBLB allocates extra funding for Extra races taking place during the year. Extra races are held to encourage betting and increase turnover for the benefit of the racing industry.

The total funds allocated for the Extra and Apprentice Race Schemes for 2010 are £1.23m and £70,000 respectively.

As well as the HBLB's contribution, Prize Money for racing is contributed by racehorse owners, racecourses and sponsors, and through the Divided Races fund. The HBLB's contribution comprises over 50% of the total Prize Money pool.
